Invisalign for Kids and Teens: What's the deal?

Invisalign for the entire family.

If you’re considering whether Invisalign is a good choice for your child, you’re not alone. A recent study by the American Association of Orthodontists found that Invisalign was the most requested treatment for adolescents, with nearly half of orthodontists reporting that they offer Invisalign to teens and kids.

Invisalign for kids and teens is becoming an increasingly popular choice for many parents and their children, thanks to its ease of use and its many advantages over traditional braces.

Invisalign is also much more comfortable than traditional braces. Traditional braces can be uncomfortable, especially when they are first put on, as they require tightening and adjusting throughout the treatment. Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable plastic that fits snugly over the teeth, so there is no need for tight, uncomfortable metal brackets and wires.

Invisalign also does not require frequent visits to the orthodontist for adjustments. Instead, your child will receive a new set of aligners every two weeks that will gradually move their teeth into the desired position.

Invisalign is also more hygienic than traditional braces. Traditional braces make it difficult to brush and floss around the brackets and wires, which can lead to plaque accumulation and tooth decay. Invisalign aligners are removable, so children can brush and floss their teeth as usual and the aligners can be removed while eating. This makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene, which is essential for good oral health. Invisalign is also a much faster way to straighten teeth than traditional braces. The aligners are designed to move the teeth into their desired position in a much shorter amount of time than traditional braces. This means your child can have straighter teeth in as little as 6 months, compared to the two or more years that traditional braces can take. Invisalign is also much less expensive than traditional braces. The cost of traditional braces can be prohibitive for some families, but Invisalign is often more affordable and can be covered by some insurance plans.

Invisalign is a clear alternative to Braces

Instead of wearing traditional metal braces, with Invisalign, you now have the option to wear a series of clear plastic trays made out of Invisalign’s patented SmartTrack Material. Ideally, we recommend that you wear each aligner for 22 hours a day. Each Invisalign aligner is specifically designed for you and it will place gentle force on each individual tooth that needs to be moved. Approximately every 10 days, as the aligners are replaced, the teeth will eventually reach their optimal aesthetic place previously designed by our dentists. Once your treatment is completed, you are then given a retainer appliance to ensure your teeth do not drift from their final position.

Why should you choose Invisalign?

Discreet Appearance:

Invisalign aligners are the perfect option for those looking to straighten their teeth subtly and discreetly.

More Comfortable Wear:

Traditional braces have metal wires that often cause discomfort. Invisalign is made of soft, flexible plastics called SmartTrack designed to reduce irritation.

Improved Oral Hygiene:

The removable aligners make it easy to maintain a healthy smile because there are no wires or metal brackets to inhibit your traditional brushing and flossing habits.

Fewer Dietary Restrictions:

During typical treatment with Braces, it is common that patients must refrain from eating many foods they previously enjoyed for fear of damaging their wires or brackets. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing you to take them out during meals and maintain your usual diet throughout your treatment.

How exactly does Invisalign work?

Over the course of your treatment, Dr. Bullock will supply you with a series of clear aligners customized for your teeth. Each aligner will make slight adjustments to tooth position, a process that is mapped out in advance by your doctor, specifically for your situation. When the aligners are placed on the teeth, they cause the teeth to gradually shift from their current position.

On average every 2 weeks, you will begin using the next set of aligners, which will continue the teeth straightening process until you have reached the end of your treatment plan!

Does Invisalign work for my Children and Teens?

Yes it does! In fact, we have a specific type of Invisalign called Invisalign Teen which has a few key differences from the traditional Invisalign treatment plans available to adults:
  1. Coloured Compliance Tabs: Invisalign Teen features a distinct blue dot on each aligner, which will eventually fade away after two weeks of wear (the recommended wear for time for each tray). This technology helps Dr. Bullock determine if movements are finished and ready for the next stage in the treatment process. It also reminds your children to wear the aligner as often as they should, as Dr. Bullock will be able to tell if the duration of has been inadequate.
  2. Replacement Aligners:  Invisalign Teen comes with 6 free replacement aligners, just in case your child loses theirs.
  3. Eruption Tabs: Many teens still have permanent teeth emerging. This is why there is additional space left in the aligners to make room for any adult teeth which need to erupt.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Parkway Smiles Dental, we’ve helped patients as young as 5 years old with their orthodontic conditions. Don’t hesitate to bring your child in for a free orthodontic consultation with our family dentists.

Over the last 11 years, we’ve helped thousands of patients smile with confidence. We stand behind our work and dedicate ourselves to making sure that you’re our number 1 priority.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends every child have an orthodontic assessment no later than age 7. That’s because not all orthodontic problems can be treated if we were to wait for all adult teeth to be present. Waiting on treatment can lead to a less than ideal result. Certain orthodontic problems are best treated when children have a combination of adult and baby teeth.
