Emergency Dentistry Calgary: What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any problem in your mouth that requires urgent treatment in order to save your teeth and/or relieve your pain. It’s important to give us a call as soon as possible, as timely treatment can be the key to saving your teeth a preventing worsening issues.
A few common examples of dental emergencies are:
- Severe toothache
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Uncontrollable blood loss after a recent extraction
- Swelling of face or mouth
- Trauma to the face or mouth
During an emergency appointment at Parkway Smiles, our main concern is to alleviate the any pain and discomfort. Depending on your condition, you may be advised to attend further treatments in order to completely restore your dental health.
If you are in severe pain while traveling to our dental office, then we recommend that you take over the counter pain killers. If you’re experiencing bleeding from a traumatic injury, bite down on a gauze pad to apply pressure.
What to do if you’ve lost a tooth?
Don’t panic. There’s a good chance your tooth can still be saved, but it requires immediate dental attention. Give us a call immediately and make your way to our office.
Before doing so, locate the tooth and, if possible, handle it by the crown and not by the root. If possible, gently rinse the tooth in water by simply holding it under the tap. Next, carefully place the tooth back into the socket and hold it there until you reach us. If you can’t keep it in the socket, then place it in a small container in some milk instead. The quicker the tooth is re-inserted, the better the chance of saving it.
Regular check-ups every 6 months will help reduce the risk of experiencing a dental emergency, but we know that accidents can happen regardless.
